Gear Consulting Group to Offer AGMA’s Gear Manufacturing Technology Course

2008 Class Dates

April 2-4 at Star-SU, Inc. in Hoffman Estates, IL
June 4-6 at Liebherr America in Saline, MI
September 17-19 California - Location to be determined

According to the instructors, Geoff Ashcroft and Ron Green, "Our intention is that participants gain a thorough grasp of the theory as well as practical aspects of gear manufacturing. This approach ensures knowledge of everyday problems, and an understanding of how to think through the trouble shooting process."

During the three-day course the following material will be covered:

Gear Theory

  • Basic theory of the involute tooth geometry, and the need to understand the basics in analyzing and trouble-shooting the cutting, finishing and inspection processes.

Gear Inspection

  • The theories of various inspection processes.
  • Traditional and modern methods and machines used to inspect gears.
  • Analysis of inspection of data.

Gear Manufacturing

  • The importance of gear blank accuracy and design.
  • An overview of common manufacturing processes.
  • The logical choices of manufacturing methods according to gear design.

Gear Hobbing

  • An in-depth study of the capabilities and problems related to this process.
  • Logical trouble shooting via analysis of inspection data.

Gear Shaping

  • An in-depth study of the capabilities and problems related to the process.
  • Logical trouble shooting via analysis of inspection data.

Gear Tools - Hobs

  • How to specify the correct tool for the requirement.
  • Hob sharpening procedures and analysis of gear problems resulting from tool inaccuracies.

Gear Tools - Shaping

  • How to specify the correct tool for the requirement.
  • Hob sharpening procedures and analysis of gear problems resulting from tool inaccuracies.

Production Estimating

  • Calculation of production times.
  • Choice of tool materials and the benefits and problems association with them.
  • Summary of the state of the art of carbide and super high-speed steels.

Hard Finishing

  • An overview of the various options for finishing gears in the hardened state.

Gear Shaving

  • Understanding the various shaving processes, their advantages and limitations.
