Education & Training

Does AGMA have instructors who will teach courses in my plant?

Yes, you can take advantage of our In-Plant Basic Course, taught by experienced industry professionals who can bring the complete course on gear manufacturing into your plant, teaching your employees on your machines. The In-Plant Basic Course is the same curriculum taught in AGMA’s popular Training School for Gear Manufacturing in Chicago.

Discover the benefits of having the course taught in your own plant:

1) You can send as many employees as you need to without incurring extra fees for instructors or travel and lodging.
2) You can work with the instructor to customize the curriculum to your specific requirements and type of equipment.
3) “Hands-on” sessions can be added as needed.

The In-Plant Basic Course has succeeded for large companies and small companies alike. Such companies as Fairfield Manufacturing and Star-SU have been enthusiastic about their experiences.

This course can be tailored to suit your needs, adjusted to the skill level of your employees focused on your equipment and, best of all, timed to suit your convenience. To bring the In-Plant Basic Course to your plant, please email Leslie Jones.

Who is the typical student in the AGMA Basic Training for Gear Manufacturing?

The typical student for the AGMA Basic Training for Gear Manufacturing is a machine operator in a gear manufacturing facility. We require that the employees who participate have six months experience and are familiar with basic shop safety procedures. In addition to machine operators, others who have attended the weeklong Training School include sales engineers, marketing personnel, company presidents and employees of PR firms.

This school focuses on both the theory and practice of gear manufacturing, and the instructors are all seasoned gearing professionals.

Classes are kept to fewer than 20 participants so that each person can interact freely with the instructors with the objective of being able to assess his own work and make needed process improvements immediately following training.

Who should I contact regarding teaching a course?

AGMA’s Education Council is interested in building its education and training program. If you are able to help develop the curriculum and teach a course for the industry, we invite you to contact Jan Alfieri, .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address), AGMA Education Manager

Membership

Who can be a member of AGMA?

Membership is open to companies with a manufacturing interest in the gear and mechanical power transmission industry. Membership is not restricted by geography; AGMA has members worldwide. Learn more about the types of companies that are members in AGMA.

Does AGMA have individual or student memberships?

AGMA’s primary membership is for companies/corporations that manufacture gears, gearboxes, flexible couplings or mechanical power transmission equipment or components. We also have members that supply machine tools, cutting tools and other capital equipment to the gear manufacturing industry and that offer supplies or services, such as gear blanks, lubricants, heat-treating, grinding, etc.

Users of gears and gearing equipment may also join. We do have a few independent consultants and professors of mechanical engineering as individual technical members.

However, AGMA does not have student memberships or memberships for individual engineers who are employed at companies that manufacture or use gears.

How much does it cost?

AGMA members who manufacture gears pay annual dues based on sales of gears and related products or of sales to the gear industry. Learn more about calculating dues.

Technical Activities

How do I join a technical committee?

AGMA welcomes representatives from member companies to participate in any of the Association’s technical activities. To join a committee, the interested person must send a formal request to the AGMA technical department at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

There are two levels of membership on AGMA Technical Committees:

  • participants, who actively contribute to the work of the committee, attend meetings and have voting rights; and
  • observers, who simply wish to stay abreast of topics the committee is addressing and only receive meeting agendas and minutes to achieve that purpose.

Each member starts out as an observer and, after showing an interest and participating in a couple of the committee’s meetings, can be classified by the chairman as a participant.

How can I get technical help finding or understanding an AGMA standard?

To find an applicable standard, visit our Online Store, email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) or call (703) 684-0211.

Although AGMA staff cannot give technical advice in application engineering, users who have questions about the standard’s proper meaning may submit a request for a formal “interpretation.” The request should go to the technical department (please e-mail .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)), which will coordinate the developing committee’s response.

Also, AGMA offers a list of independent, member consultants; these individuals offer services that include the application of AGMA standards.

What is an ISO standard?

The International Organization for Standardization is the coordinating body for the creation of international standards. ISO’s scope includes the development of technical equipment standards, such as those for gearing and mechanical power transmission equipment. AGMA is the secretariat for ISO’s Technical Committee 60, Gears, which coordinates all ISO standards development for the gear industry.

How do I purchase a standard?

AGMA and relevant ISO technical standards may be purchased in one of three ways: directly from AGMA’s Online Store; from our technical distributor, IHS/Global Engineering (800/854-7179); or from the Electronic Standards Store of the American National Standards Institute.

What standard lists the tolerance for gears?

There are at least five primary AGMA standards with tolerance grading classifications for the geometric features of gear teeth.

Spur and helical gears:
ANSI/AGMA 2015-1-A01
ANSI/AGMA 2015-2-A06

Bevel gears:
ANSI/AGMA 2009-A98
ANSI/AGMA ISO 17485-A08

Cylindrical worm gears:
ANSI/AGMA 2011-A98

*In addition, for spur and helical gears, ISO 1328-1 or ISO 1328-2 could be applied.

How are papers selected for the FTM?

The call for papers is circulated in the fall of the year preceding the year of the conference. Submitted abstracts are required before the middle of January for review. Papers should represent original, unpublished or advanced work that will be reviewed prior to acceptance. For more information, please contact AGMA’s technical department at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).

What is the AGMA Fall Technical Meeting?

The Fall Technical Meeting is AGMA’s annual technical conference (congress) focused primarily on the latest technical developments in design, manufacturing and application experience for gears and mechanical power transmission systems.

Is there a cross-reference between ISO, DIN or JIS tolerances and AGMA tolerances?

There is no direct conversion from the ISO, DIN or JIS tolerance systems to the AGMA tolerance systems.

It is recommended that the applicable ISO, DIN or JIS and the AGMA standard are obtained to perform a specific comparison for a given design and size.

It is also recommended that for specifications between the customer and manufacturer, only one system be used to designate a tolerance grade. AGMA gear rating software is available to compare ISO and AGMA tolerances for certain applications.

How can I find a manufacturer for a particular type of gear?

AGMA’s online Product Locator is an excellent tool for finding an AGMA member company to match your gearing requirements. The information in the Product Locator also is available on CD; please contact AGMA.
