Job purpose

 

Coordinate measuring machine (CMM) operator create inspection programs for coordinate measuring machines, devices that measures objects’ physical characteristics such as dimensions and other geometrical qualities.  The machine is used during the manufacturing and assembly process, specifically during the automated production process. The CMM programmer’s responsibility is to ensure the machine is properly working through programming scripts and tests.

 

Duties and responsibilities

  • The selected CMM programmer will take the lead on all CMM programming activities for the Zeiss CMM utilizing Calypso & 4 meter Romer Arm utilizing PC Dimis.
  • Candidate will be primarily responsible for online and offline programming of PC DMIS/Calypso programs that will be utilized by other CMM operators.
  • Candidate will also be responsible to perform precision inspection verifications on machined parts, components, assemblies and materials. May include but is not limited to first article parts, in-process and final inspection on assemblies, and materials for workmanship and conformance to specifications / drawings.
  • Candidate will utilize inspection equipment such as micrometers, gauge blocks, dial indicators, height gauges, optical comparators, profilometers, and CMM's & Romar arm.
  • Approves or rejects items and documents inspection results as required. Communicates with internal customers as required to resolve inspection, engineering and manufacturing challenges.
  • The CMM Operator will ensure all materials submitted for CMM Inspection are processed in a timely manner in accordance with company and customer requirements.
  • Troubleshoot and contact outside technical support services for CMM software, as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Quality Process & Improvement Manager.

 

Qualifications

 

  • A minimum 2 years of experience in Zeiss CMM/Romer arm operation (PC DMIS & Calypso) is highly desired.
  • Must be familiar with MS Office with ability to navigate and prepare simple spreadsheets.
  • The ability to write effectively, to read and understand work documents, to communicate information clearly to coworkers and supervisor.
  • Functional understanding of ISO 9001/AS9100 requirements preferred.
  • Supports the process audit/final inspection process as needed, to ensure products and processes meet customer requirements.
  • Blue print reading and strong understanding of GD&T.
  • Passion, energy sense of urgency with track record of setting goals and achieving them required.
  • Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with leadership skills and growth potential required.
  • The position also involves the ability to coach or mentor other members, through instruction and personal example.
  • The ability to identify opportunities to improve current production processes and to implement the necessary steps for the improvements.
  • The ability and desire to provide excellent service to internal customers.
  • Must have PC DMIS experience. Refresher courses are available to employees.
  • Directly link CAD systems and measurement software through its Direct CAD interface (DCI) technology

 

Working conditions

 

  • CMM programmers' work is completed in an office setting, though sometimes the programmer must be on-site to inspect the machine.
  • The programmer's hours may vary depending on the industry and when the company uses the machine.
  • If the machine is utilized 24 hours a day, the programmer may be assigned the “swing shift” some days and regular shifts on others.
  • Usually, entry-level programmers are assigned the swing shift.

 

Physical requirements

 

If the job is physically demanding, this should be stated in the job description. A physically demanding job is one where the incumbent is required to stand for extended periods of time, lift heavy objects on a regular basis, do repetitive tasks with few breaks, and so forth.
