Education: High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED), Machine Tool Degree Desirable
Work Experience: Must have 5+ years related experience/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience
Job Summary: Primary responsibilities are set up and operating a variety of gear-cutting machines, such as gear shapers, hobs, and generators to machine spline, rack, or gear teeth on metal blanks, analyzing specifications according to knowledge of gear designs, shop mathematics, and gear machining procedures: Studies blueprint to visualize machining required, and plans sequence of operations. Selects machine and method of holding work piece to cutting angle on arbor, in chuck or other holding device, using wrenches. Selects, positions, and secures cutters in tool head, in spindle, or on arbor. Sets feed rates and rotation speeds of cutters and work piece in relation to each other by selecting and mounting gears, cams, or templates, or by moving levers. Moves controls to set cutting speeds and depth of stroke and cut for reciprocating cutters, and to position tool and work piece in relation to each other. May select and mount guides to impart twisting motion to spindle for cutting helical gears. Starts machine, turns valve handle to start flow of coolant against cutter and work piece. Verifies conformance of machined gear to specifications, using gear measuring wires, involute checker, master gears, optical comparator (shadowgraph), and other special gear inspection equipment. May operate broaching machine to broach internal splines or gears.
Personal Characteristics: Results oriented with the ability to pay strong attention to detail. The successful candidate need to be a pro-active self-starter that can work independently. Excellent analytical and organizational skills are required for this position.
Principal Area of Responsibility: As Gear Cutter Operator, this position is to:
-reads process sheets and blueprints for instructions and discrepancies; assist, instructs and trains others in reading blueprints and process sheets
-performs accurate gear computations to generate desired lead, involute and spacing tolerances
-select and use correct combination of cutting tools, tool holders and fixtures for specific applications
-reads and correctly interprets lead and involute charts
-interprets and makes proper adjustments based on information from lead, involute and spacing charts
-runs various types of machines in department meeting performance standards on all assigned jobs
-sets up all assigned jobs, assists, instructs, trains and supervises others as directed in setups
-perform first-place inspection and issue inspection tickets
-monitor maintenance of equipment and cleanliness of working area
-review new job with supervisor preceding production
-communicate any departmental problems to the supervisor
-Preform quality checks daily and assist with duties as needed
