Quality Engineer: CMM Programmer

Classification – Exempt (salary)
Salary - $55,000 – 70,000 annually

Hours – 7:00 am to 4:30 pm
Reports to – Manufacturing Manager

Date – June 29, 2018



A quality engineer filling this role offers the ability to effectively interpret component and subassembly drawing requirements, including GD&T, on precision machined components to program coordinate measuring machines (CMM’s), ideally using Calypso software with GearPro. This team member primarily generates and maintains CMM programs of proven capability to repeat results, and trains others to use the equipment to effectively evaluate low volume, mix-model production. Normal daily duties will include working closely with design engineering to improve product designs, while also working with quality technicians and CNC machinists to assure suitable test methods are applied.


Essential Functions

  • Interpret drawing specifications, including geometric dimensions and tolerances (GD&T)
  • Generate DCC CMM programs using Calypso and GearPro, and similar software
  • Facilitate measurement system analyses (MSA)
  • Program and tool up CMM’s to generate repeatable & reliable results (GRR <10% ideally, 10-30% max)
  • Prepare product acceptance plans, including first article (FAI) and in process test reports, utilizing APQP, FMEA, and PPAP methodology on occasion
  • Quarantine and evaluate failed product
  • Provide constructive feedback to design engineering to advance product design and development
  • Support the calibration of measurement equipment
  • Objectively audit manufacturing processes for quality assurance
  • Assist manufacturing personnel with inspection equipment needs
  • Support the procurement staff with the qualification of the supplier chain
  • Operate a crane



  1. Read blueprints effectively, including GD&T
  2. CMM programming, in Calypso
  3. Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
  4. Create standard work using Microsoft Office products
  5. Use technical math, including basic trigonometry
  6. Report accurately
  7. Manage time effectively
  8. Auditing


Supervisory Responsibility: This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.


Work Environment:  Shop conditions working in the inspection lab.


Physical Demands: Able to stand for 8 hours and lift at least 20 lbs. without assistance.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time position.

Travel: Seldom


Required Education and Experience:  A high school diploma or GED, 5 years relevant working experience, and CMM Programming experience are required.


Preferred Education and Experience:  A quality professional possessing a bachelor’s degree or ASQ certification with 7-years of manufacturing experience working with complex geometry, including gear components, is preferred. Six Sigma Green/Black Belt certification is also desirable.


Additional Eligibility Qualifications

Measure angular dimensions, radii, contours, clearances, thread leads and other specifications using precision measuring instruments, such as micrometers, gage blocks, dial indicators, height gages, level protractors, optical comparators, etc.
