Plastic Gears Reinvented: 3D Printed Molds for Rapid Product Development

July 12, 2023

2023 Emerging Tech Webinar Series – July

Modern advances in thermoplastics have positioned materials including acetal and nylon as prime candidates to produce gears. While these materials have many benefits over traditional metal gears, the associated manufacturing process of injection molding can be prohibitively slow, especially during the development of new gears. Leveraging the speed of 3D printing, Fortify is reinventing injection molding with quick turn mold tooling. This presentation will take a deep dive into how Fortify is able to rapidly produce molded gears in advanced thermoplastics. Through the lens of real world examples, attendees can expect to learn how and when to implement quick turn molds to speed up development cycles along with what makes Fortifyโ€™s printer technology so unique.

Presenter

Ben MacDonald, Senior Applications Engineer, Fortify

An experienced Mechanical Engineer by training, Ben pairs his knowledge of the intersection between 3D printing and tooling with a customer first approach to drive the adoption of 3D printing as a manufacturing resource. Fresh off his graduation from Wentworth, he has spent the past 5 years immersed in all things 3D printing and tooling. Specifically focused on Injection Mold Tooling, Ben has built Fortify into an industry leader with a focus on design and processing. He continues to develop new applications with a customer first perspective as he focuses on the ESD and greater tooling market. Outside of application development, Ben has a strong interest in 3D printing workflows where he enjoys engaging in end-to-end workflow development.
