The increasing demand for high-precision internal gears in automotive and industrial applications has driven the development of advanced hard finishing processes. This presentation introduces SkiveFinishing®, a novel method designed to achieve superior gear quality and surface finish for hardened internal gears. SkiveFinishing® is defined as hard finishing by gear skiving using a dressable-free CBN skiving cutter, combining the productivity of skiving with the precision of hard finishing. After providing an overview of conventional manufacturing techniques for internal gears, the process principle of SkiveFinishing® will be explained, highlighting its unique advantages in terms of efficiency, flexibility, and achievable quality. Initial machining results on the LK 280 and LK 500 gear skiving machines demonstrate gear quality within ISO 1328 Class 5 and surface roughness values of Ra < 0.4 µm, confirming the process’s capability for high-performance applications. A comparative analysis of SkiveFinishing® against hard skiving and CBN profile grinding will be presented, emphasizing differences in process efficiency and achievable tolerances. The session concludes with a summary and outlook on future developments and potential applications of SkiveFinishing® in gear manufacturing.
