Technical Committees

Shape the gear standards of tomorrow, today!

Committees:

Help develop standards for the future gear industry by joining one of MPMAโ€™s technical committees. MPMA technical committees and working groups hold over 100 meetings each year to develop the standards in our industry. You could make an impact both in the United States and around the world. Many of our technical committees act as a Technical Advisory Group (TAG) to their ISO counterpart Working Groups (WG) for the development of ISO standards as well.

To join a standards project, all you need to do is be a member of MPMA andโ€ฏemail us your interest atโ€ฏtech@motionpower.orgClick here to see current standards projects.

The benefits:

  • Having a direct hand in developing the standards used industry-wide.
  • Growing a personal network with technically focused peer group (we have members who have worked together on committees for more than three decades).
  • You get to represent your company as a subject matter expert or learn from others to bring that knowledge back to your company โ€“ either way, you grow your skills and help showcase the technical side of what your company does.
  • You get incredible hands-on professional development that does not cost any money. It is included with your membership and is actually a members-only benefit.
  • Each participant helps to ensure the ongoing development of gearing standards for years to come!

What does it take?

  • Be a member of MPMA (formerly AGMA and ABMA).
  • 2-3 hours a month.
  • 95% of the meetings are held virtually (2-hour meeting). Others are in-person.
  • No experience necessary, but have a willingness to learn and contribute as one is comfortable.
  • You do not need to share your companyโ€™s intellectual property โ€“ bring whatever data that can be shared. Standards are a base level of information that is agreed upon by the members.

Details

  • The technical committee structure has two levels: Committee and Working Group.
    • Committee: a permanent, overarching committee that manages ISO TAG responses, project Working Groups, and document reaffirmations; also responds to requests for interpretation (RFIs).
    • Working Group: a temporary group formed within a committee that creates a new document or works on a revision. The name of the Working Group consists of the document number designation). This group only works on one project at a time, and the Working Group is dissolved at completion of the project.
  • A Working Group member is a representative of a member company that regularly attends meetings and accepts and performs work assignments as assigned by the Project Leader. Only active members will be considered in determining a quorum and have a vote on committee activities.
  • Meetings are either held face-to-face or via web conferencing. Face-to-face meetings are generally held over the course of two days at an easily accessible location or a memberโ€™s facility. Web conferences are generally two hours long and usually start at either 10:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern time. Active projects typically hold meetings every other month.
